"The Writing Life", Guest Post & Giveaway with At What Cost author Jessie Anderson

The Writing Life

Having a title like “The Writing Life” would indicate that my life is spent writing. At least the majority of it, like a full time job. While I consider myself a full time writer, I rarely have enough time to write.

You see, I’m a full time mom and a full time wife. I volunteer at the library and participate in church activities. While that doesn’t seem like much to some people, it fills my days to the brim. So when I think of the writing life, I have to say, I wish I had more of it.

It’s true that I sit down to write, practically every weekday, except grocery day—because that takes me all day long with a baby in tow. Yet, I still can’t seem to find time to get to my story. Perhaps it’s the “Mom, can I have a snack?” echoes coming from the living room or the fussiness right beside me as I try to type with my infant in the highchair next to my desk. I don’t know. I dream of the writing life where I can actually go and write. You know, for hours at a time. And be focused. And create amazing stories in a few short weeks. But that doesn’t happen for me. I’m lucky if I can get one chapter done in one or even two weeks and sometimes, I end up going a few weeks without making any headway whatsoever.

I love writing. But I love my family more. So sometimes, the writing needs to be pushed aside for the things that are more important. Other days, my little goobers will busy themselves playing a game on the computer or will sit at the counter doing crafts and actually allow me a few moments of uninterrupted time to write. How lovely is that? Now that they’re back in school full time, and I have more time to devote to my writing. But on days when they baby is fussy or there are a million things to do on the to-do list other than writing, I have to suffer with a sentence or a paragraph per day and be content with what God gives me, both in my family and in my career.

So you see, while I consider writing my career and part of my life, my real life is spent looking for the moments where I can squeeze in just one more sentence before I have to cook dinner. JI’m content with that.

During her junior year, sixteen-year-old Maggie Reynolds expected to shop for prom dresses not maternity clothes. Now, instead of studying for the SATs, she’s reading, What to Expect When You’re Expecting. Maggie’s ‘Mother Dearest’ lives in fear that Maggie will somehow taint the family name, so Maggie can’t turn to her for help. Meanwhile, her father is oblivious to anything but his 9-9 job. And her boyfriend, Justin? She’s pretty sure he’ll stay by her side.

While Maggie wrestles with her options, Justin offers a solution: abortion. It would solve all her problems quickly, easily, and effectively. And her parents would never know, which means they won’t throw her out and cut her off like they’d always threatened if she got herself knocked up. Now Maggie must decide which choice she can live with: abortion or teenage motherhood. Either way, it’ll be a tough road to travel.

Jessie Andersen lives in a small town in Western New York with her husband and three kids. A former English teacher, she now spends her time writing while the kids are at school and the baby is sleeping. She volunteers at the local library and sings in the church band.

  2. I know balancing family life and writing is hard. I was having a hard time doing it because of all the interruptions. I get too frustrated and it makes the writers block wall shoot up. No one can write when they are frustrated all the time. So I set my stuff aside to work on when my 3 year old starts school. I still work at home though and so I still find myself frustrated when I cant get anything done. But you're right, family is more important so I bust have to find a balance. That's good that you can take it so well though!
